Amongst the multitude of media centers out there today, we found an odd gem sticking out– the Rapsody N35. The Rapsody N35 is simple and sleek...
Is there a new H.264 player joining Tomacro and DViCo in the EM8623 line products that can handle both VC-1 and H.264? Yes, eventually there is. We had expected the release in November but seems as some quick resellers have added the NTD37HD, Novatron's latest player to their stores for around €300. It's good to have competition but likely Tomacro will remain the best performing one for VC-1 and H.264...
The Mediagate 350SHD is a small form factor media centre -- although it's not running Microsoft's Windows Media Center OS -- that comes in the form of a very small PC case -- think Mac Mini turned on its side and you'd be close. If you're familiar with Mediagate's product lines, the MG-350SHD is encased in essentially the same casing as the MG-35, although that unit omits the wireless network capability of the MG-350SHD.
The world of media streamers is ever-evolving, and Mediagate's MG-350 HD is one of the latest models to take advantage of high definition formats. This diminutive little device is primarily designed to get media from your PC to the television, but if you feel like getting your hands dirty installing a hard drive, it can even act as a standalone media server.
The $190 Mediagate portable MPEG-4 player is a clever device that allows you to play multiple media types, including DivX and MPEG-4 formats, by attaching it to a TV and/or receiver. So unlike the more expensive options, you don't get a built-in screen, which means you won't be using it to keep the kids quiet in the back of the car on long journeys.
While most media devices on the market either include a hard disk for storing content locally, or are able to play files stored on a networked PC, the Mediagate MG-35 has a bet each way. It's both a network media player and a portable storage device rolled into one. It's designed to pipe video and audio content across a network and play it back on a TV or home stereo system, but can also be used as a portable hard disk to move files around or play media stored on its internal drive.
A media center PC can be expensive, even if you build one yourself. What do you really want from such a machine? Primarily, you'd probably like to store media on its hard drive to play through your home entertainment center. If you don't need other typical media center functionality, such as digital video recording and channel guides, the MediaGate MG-350HD might be the device you're looking for.
Media extenders, devices that pull content off your computer and put it on your TV, have become more popular with the launch of the Apple TV. And that very intuitive device has sparked competition, such as Netgear's Digital Entertainer EVA8000, which, sadly, is prone to crashes, and some that flat-out don't work. (I'd stay away from the Pegasus Cynalynx at all costs.) So, even though the setup process can be tricky,...
